A INTRODUÇÃO da telegrafia eléctrica nos anos 40 do século XIX lançou as bases da construção das redes mundiais de telecomunicações, envolvendo processos de inovação acelerados no quadro de uma dinâmica de acentuado desenvolvimento económico, político, social e cultural.
Em vários momentos e em diferentes contextos tecnológicos, a estruturação destas redes foi condicionada pela realidade geográfica e pelas estratégias que lhe estiveram associadas (de natureza política, económica, empresarial…), acentuando a relevância das redes de comunicações nos espaços nacionais e na sua relação com o Mundo.
Pretende-se, neste encontro, reflectir sobre o papel das redes de comunicações na construção do Mundo contemporâneo, enquanto factor de modernidade e desenvolvimento atendendo à sua evolução no contexto histórico que decorreu a partir dos meados do século XIX compreendendo, entre outras questões: as relações estratégicas e sua contextualização, a formação de mercados nacionais e globais de comunicações, os contextos de guerra e crise, os processos de inovação (e com eles a introdução de novos sistemas de comunicação) e as múltiplas estratégias de articulação à escala local, continental e planetária.
Da génese da telegrafia aos sistemas globais de comunicações, representa um traço da história de como se cumpriu o propósito de Ligar o Mundo.
THE INTRODUCTION of electric telegraphy during the 1840’s has laid the basis of the construction of global communication networks, which involved accelerated processes of innovation, within a dynamics of accentuated economic, political, social and cultural development.
At various times and in different technological contexts, the structuring of these networks has been particularly influenced by the geographical reality and the strategies that were associated (those of political, economic, business nature...), accentuating the relevance of communication networks in national context and, from there, their relationship with the World.
This meeting aims, therefore, to reflect about the role of communications networks within the construction of contemporary World as a factor of modernity and development, considering their evolution in the historical context since the mid-nineteenth century, comprising, among other issues: the strategic relations and their contextualization, the formation of national markets and global communications, the contexts of war and crisis, processes of innovation (along with the introduction of new communication systems ) and the multiple strategies of articulation at a local, continental and global scale.
From the origins of the telegraph to global communications systems, this is a part of the history of how the purpose of Connecting the World was accomplished.
